This week is National LGBTQ+ Health Awareness Week. Started in 2002 to address the unique health needs and concerns of the LGBTQ+ community, this year's theme is "Vital Vibrant Voices." In honor of the event, we've created a special edition of our newsletter focusing on LGBTQ+ health.

The National Coalition for LGBTQ+ Health, which sponsors National LGBTQ+ Health Awareness Week, conducted a health survey with over 2,300 health care providers in 2022. The results are enlightening and showcase disparities in LGBTQ+ health care.

  • LGBTQ+ healthcare providers are facing burnout and staff shortages, requesting enhanced training, more specialists and better support.

  • Mental and behavioral health is identified as the top concern for the LGBTQ+ community, with 71% of providers highlighting it as a critical issue.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected LGBTQ+ services, particularly in areas of care linkage, HIV testing and case management.

  • Most providers include questions on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) like gender identity, sex at birth, and sexual orientation on intake forms, but are less likely to add pronoun options or offer LGBTQ+ materials in waiting areas, indicating a need for broader SOGI supports.

We've gathered articles from the News is Out publishers all about health for you to check out today in one place. For questions about LGBTQ+ Health Awareness Week and activities you can participate, check out the website healthlgbtq.org.

Stay healthy,
